Where traditional web analytics maps human behavior, AI Visibility makes the full lifecycle of AI interactions transparent: from crawling to citation to actual traffic.

For organizations that want to show up in AI-generated answers, this is a paradigm shift. For the first time, it's possible to understand, whether and how AI platforms are using your content. That matters now more than ever: an increasing number of users get their information directly from AI assistants, bypassing traditional Google search entirely. Those who aren't visible there are losing a growing share of potential visitors.

Bot Activity: Who's Crawling Your Website?

The Bot Activity dashboard analyzes server-side CDN logs to show which automated systems are accessing your content. Unlike traditional client-side tracking, it also captures bots that don't execute JavaScript — which is common among AI crawlers.

The key metrics:

  • Bot Operator: Which AI platforms and bot operators access your pages most frequently?
  • AI Request Share: What proportion of your total page requests comes from AI bots? This puts automated traffic in context relative to overall traffic.
  • Bot Activity: Categorization of crawlers by their primary purpose, such as search and discovery, AI assistants, data services, or developer tools. This distinction helps assess whether bot activity is productive or simply putting load on your infrastructure.

Clarity automatically detects when visitors arrive on your website via a link in an AI-generated answer, distinguishing between two channels:

  • AIPlatform: Organic referrals from unpaid AI answers. When a user asks a question in ChatGPT, receives an answer containing a link to your website, and clicks it — that visit is captured as AIPlatform traffic.
  • PaidAIPlatform: Paid placements within AI experiences, such as a sponsored ad in Microsoft Copilot linking to your page.

In most cases, Microsoft Clarity is up and running quickly and can be integrated via a tag manager with minimal effort. The AI Visibility Suite measures how AI systems interact with your website content across three levels: Bot Activity (which AI bots crawl your pages), AI Citations (whether your content is cited in AI-generated answers), and AI Platform Channels (how much traffic comes from AI platforms). For the first time, you can track the full lifecycle of AI interactions in one place.

 

Clarity detects traffic and bot activity from ChatGPT (OpenAI), Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Claude (Anthropic), and Perplexity. Detection covers standalone platforms. AI features embedded in other products, such as search engines or office tools, aren't currently tracked separately.

 

Copilot is the built-in AI assistant within Microsoft Clarity. It analyzes heatmap and recording data and answers questions in plain language, for example, "Why do users abandon the checkout page?" or "Which pages have the most rage clicks?" Copilot groups sessions by pattern and surfaces insights without requiring you to manually review hundreds of recordings.

 

Microsoft Clarity is completely free, including the AI Visibility features. Bot Activity does require a server-side CDN connection (Cloudflare, CloudFront, or Fastly), which may incur log-forwarding costs depending on your provider and traffic volume. For WordPress projects, integration via the Clarity plugin is typically cost-neutral.

 

Bot Activity measures which automated systems crawl your pages, the earliest signal of AI interaction (upstream). AI Citations measures whether your content actually appears in AI-generated answers (midstream). A bot visit doesn't automatically mean a citation. Together, both metrics reveal whether crawling your content translates into real AI visibility.
